I’ve been a loyal customer of American Airlines for quite a few years now, and seen the changes they’ve made to become a better airline as a great improvement... Then that dark day came where US Airways basically took over AA, although they called it a merger.
I was pretty concerned, because through all my flying, I have always put US Airways at the bottom when it comes to customer service and now they’ve taken over power in the airline I love flying with... Luckily I hadn’t noticed much difference, until January of this year...
I should maybe explain what this is all about... In 2013 I few a little over 100K miles on American + OneWorld and thus became Executive Platinum member. EP has some great benefits, of which the most important (to me) one is 8 Systemwide upgrades per year because we buy economy tickets in the company I work for. As someone who does a lot of longhaul flying, flying in business makes a world of difference, mainly because you can get some proper sleep, which minimizes jetlag after arrival.
Last year I unfortunately only made it to around 90K miles, which dropped me to Platinum level. I could probably have found a $700’ish return flight somewhere to get me the missing 10K points (I know a lot of people do that), but finding that time around Christmas is tough, so I settled with a year without the upgrades and brushed it off as not that big of a deal (even though it really was).
In January I get an email letter from American, with a great offer... I could maintain my EP level and the perks that comes with it for a measly $2,500! I delete the email! The nerves... I was more upset with this, than I’m happy to admit. Were they serious?
The amount was beyond reasonable... How can this be considered good customer service? Don’t they know that you can accrue that amount of points for a fraction of what they’re asking? I decided to let it go. After all, I was happy with AA in so many other ways.
Then March came with some crazy travel plans, and between mid March and mid April I flew about 35K on AA/OneWorld plus a few thousand miles on other airlines. When I got home, there’s an E-mail from American Airlines. “Hey, we see that your’re flying a lot this year already, how about you reconsider spending $2,500 on upgrading to EP Level?
My blood boiled over, I had had enough. So I sit down a write a polite message to AA via their Facebook Page. This is what I wrote:
Seriously AA... Stop sending me emails about boosting my status to Executive Platinum!!! You sent me one in January because I only flew 90,000 miles with you last year, and then again today (probably because I flew 35,000 miles in the last 30 days)... But no, I am not interested in paying $2,500 for an “upgrade”! If it was a reasonable amount, then I would have considered it but that’s just nuts... I considered buying a $5-700 return flight, that would have gotten me the missing 10,000 points at the end of last year and would have, could I have found the time. But you’re asking for 4 to 5 times that amount?I’m seriously considering changing loyalty program over this and find a airline that doesn’t try to squeeze every dollar out of their loyal customers!
This is the canned answer I got:
Nick, boosting your status in entirely optional. We offer the option as a courtesy for those who weren’t able to earn their desired status within a qualifying year. We hope you’ll take advantage as it’s a great value that pays for itself with the amazing benefits that come with Elite status: !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
So American Airlines (or US Airways) apparently think is a great value? I think they have lost touch with reality... And I know what I’ve lost: My patience with them!
So now I’m looking for a new airline/loyalty program. I’ll rather change now, before I see an airline I loved flying with change into the airline I disliked the most!
So where do I go, what are my options? I mainly fly SoCal to Hong Kong and London. I’m sure there’s great advise from fellow Jalops that with help me make the right choice... Let me know in the comments!

On a semi unrelated note, I love the old American Airlines shiny planes. I hope they keep some of those around.

My mom has been a Delta member for the past 15 or so years. Don’t know the details, but she is apparently satisfied with it.

I have flown US Air for a while now with 100k international years before the merger (of note, US did buy American they are just calling it a merger). If you are looking to switch keep an eye out for loyalty matching programs from other airlines. United and Delta offer it from time to time where you just require about 1/4 of the miles to retain a similar status on their airline.

I did it last year for United so I could keep flying Star Alliance because Lufthasa/ANA gave me better services and flights when I needed to travel to Japan and Europe from Florida.

I am a bit biased though. We offer a lot of frequencies to London and Asia. I’m over there right now.

Sadly those are going to disappear in the coming decades even if they do choose to keep a few around for posterity. With the amount of composite materials used for airliner construction coming down the pipeline in the near future there won’t be enough metal left to polish to a shine like that.

As an aviation photographer, I like the old livery too. The new flat grey doesn’t photograph nearly as well. I miss how the “American” in red on silver just pops out.

It probably depends on who serves the airports you fly through. I always had good luck and excellent service with Delta but terrible service with American. This is probably because Delta in the upper midwest puts you through DTW which is a very nice airport now. American goes through O’Hare which is the third level of hell. I don’t fly that much, but where I am it is worth my while to avoid going through Chicago at all costs.

I hate flying and airports in general. As a result of that, I have zero loyalty to any airline, and just book whatever one has the best flight for wherever I happen to be flying.
My local airport isn’t a hub for any one in particular, so there’s that as well.

In a nutshell, yes, yes it is. US Airways was the acquiring company, but American was the stronger/more valuable brand, so the parent company, US Airways Group Inc., was renamed American Airlines Group Inc. and they’re gradually consolidating the two fleets under the American name. Expect the USAirification of American to continue and accelerate.
